Should You Fear the Bird?
Google is at it again, making changes to their search algorithm, with the latest installment of Hummingbird.  (Another cute animal that SEO’s will probably come to hate.)  Although they officially announced it on Thursday 9/26/13, they rolled it out near the end of August and beginning of September.

It has gone relatively unnoticed in the search engine optimization community with the exception of a few webmaster threads spotting some of the changes.  Hummingbird is the first complete rewrite of the Google algorithm in about 12 years.  The Google Panda and Penguin algorithms had simply been changes and updates made to older algorithms.  (Which has been explained that they are still valid and working.)

The Hummingbird algorithm announcement took place on the eve of Google's 15th birthday.  Perhaps you remember the Google birthday game in place of the Google logo last week.

What exactly is Google Hummingbird means?
Well, Google tells us that the name Hummingbird comes from the algorithm being “precise and fast.”  Danny Sullivan from Search Engine Land explains that “Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query – the whole sentence or conversation or meaning – is taken into account, rather than particular words.  The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.”

In other words, Google is going to hold more value on the context of the words being searched.  One example I’ve seen so far is if you are searching for “Pizza Hut calories per slice” it will look through Pizza Hut’s website first to find the information. (And put the info at the top of the results.)  Before Hummingbird, it was simply the best optimized site (like a Calorie Counting site) that talked about Pizza Hut calories.

Hummingbird really shines when it comes to conversational search available on Google Chrome and Android phones.  It places more meaning on phrases like “places”, “purchase” or “near me” when you’ve elected to allow Google to know your GPS location.  Instead of finding any “place” that you can “purchase” something, Google looks for physical stores near your exact location.

Search is definitely getting more complicated as you see more and more long tail keywords being used for search.  It seems as if most people are tired of not finding exactly what they are looking for, thus we see simple 2 word key phrases having less search volume.

What does Google Hummingbird mean for me?
That’s a great question.  sfrom around the world are dissecting and testing the new search algorithm on test sites to check for anything that could concern clients.  But since being released over a month ago with little to no impact on the search engine optimization community, it is likely that there is nothing to worry about.

One thing we have always recommended to our clients is to always be asking and answering your client’s questions within your site.  As search queries get more complicated and algorithms have the ability to find more complex results, answering the questions your clients are asking can only help you in the future.  Here’s what I’m talking about…

  • Create a list the top 10 questions your clients are asking you or about your industry
  • Create new pages on your site centered around those questions and great answers

Answering your clients’ questions helps them solve a problem and can ultimately make you an authority on a topic or subject.  When they are ready to buy your product or service, they want to buy from a trusted authority.  It appears that Google’s Hummingbird algorithm may just give an advantage in search results to the people that answer the common questions for their clients.  As for now, Hummingbird appears to be as sweet as it sounds.

In this post I am going to discuss some latest seo tips for 2013, which help you to increase the visibility of your site in search engines. Google is changing their algorithm for giving most relevant result for users. However one thing always remain after any search engine algorithm update, “Content“. It will be always on top.

Unique and Fresh Content
If You are copied content from other website, Search Engines will punish you specially Google. Not only in your website, don’t post duplicate guest post or articles. This may leads to get penalties your website and your ranking will goes down than current rankings.

Note: Before you submit any content, make sure it is not already exists.

High Quality Content
Content is always king. When writing a content make sure you are using your targeting keywords in it. Writing keywords in first paragraph and last sentence may make your content better. But don’t use keywords much more otherwise your website will get punish for Keyword Stuffing.

Keep it fine in length. Don’t write too short or too long content. If your article is too short search engines can easily identify that your content is spam. That’s while most of article submission sites only approve articles more than 300 words. Write content for users more than SEO.

SEO friendly URLs
Clean and readable URLs are good to practice. Try to use your keywords in URLs, if possible, but again don’t overdo it. Avoid use of symbols like & * @ and so on. It should look natural and significant to the page.

Add a Blog
Search engines love updated content. If you have a static website, updating it frequently is not quite possible. Still, if you wish to give updated information about your industry, business, website, products, services, events, etc, you can do so with a blog. Simply include a blog to your website, update it frequently and see the difference. For this I highly recommend using WordPress.

Natural Backlinks
Building back-links are going to be very challenging. Google accept only natural backlinks to avoid spam sites. Many of websites are hitting by Google panda. So build links naturally.  Comment spam will not work any more. Even Google will punish exact match anchor text links, when you are using same anchor text while link building.  Better is to avoid back-links from untrusted websites. You can use “Disavow links” in Google webmaster tools to avoid spam links. Try to earn some good back-links  It is going to be really difficult to get do-follow links.

Internal links is a very good SEO technique. It have so much features too. Internal links will makes bounce rate lower. Users have the ability to click on relevant links, and you will get good ranking in SEO and a free backlink. You can use related topics or posts after each post. But it should be relevant. By doing this visitors will not leave your website. You can also use “Breadcrumbs” to improve internal links. If you are using WordPress, you can checkout some essential SEO plugins that may make your blog’s rank better.

Social Media
Social media have a great roll for SEO in 2013. Getting likes in social media is showing that your content is good. Google +1, Facebook likes , Tweets will play a major roll in Search engine optimization. After publishing your content make sure you are submitted post to social media websites such as Facebook, Google +1, twitter. Also your post will get more publicity in social marketing. So Share your post after publish.

Mobile Friendly Website
Day by day each people are  jumping from PC to tablets, smart phones etc. So half percent of your visitors will come from tablets or smart phones. Ensure you are optimized your website for these mobile devices and this will be a great experience for your visitors! If your blog is WordPress, free WordPress plugins are available to make your website mobile friendly.

More than this Google Author Rank play a great roll on SEO. To make search more friendly Google has changed their algorithm frequently. Search engine optimization for Google is going to be really difficult. Anyway Focus on your content!

Matt Cutts speaks about chances of successful negative SEO…. Again!

I was grazing though today’s SEO updates this evening and I stumbled on a Webmaster help video by Matt Cutts. The interesting topic of Negative SEO has surfaced again. Thank you Matt Cutts for choosing this topic over all the 423 questions that you received. For the moment of truth we weren’t sure if negative SEO really exists because we have not run any test cases YET. However, there are wide claims from reliable sources that they were successful in creating a negative SEO effect through pretty much simple processes. After seeing the video, I am confused because Matt says negative SEO is impossible, but may occur in some cases? If so, you can use the new disavow tool to come clean? Here is the video
Disavow tool, when lunched was like a real gift to the webmasters.  But everyone thought that the intention of the tool was to correct their own mistakes in link building. Now, Matt Cutts has given a new meaning to the tool. The disavow tool is certainly a way to tackle negative SEO. But the big question – “Is negative SEO possible?” still remains. I just created a fun graphic out of this as it just felt to me that even Matt isn’t sure about this! No offense Matt… Feel free to share...

Just 19 days more for us to step into the new controversial year 2013. The ‘controversial’ label I have added is because of the Doomsday expectations we have on 21st of this month. Once we prove all rumors wrong, the long run ahead comes to our mind and there goes our thoughts safeguarding our luxuries and existence. Each one of us expects to get bigger. It is never an exception to ‘Bill Gates’ and ‘Warren Buffett’ as well.

‘Survival of the fittest’. Only those are fit manage to survive, today. Not really, I say. ‘Survival of the controversial’. Only controversies portray your presence to the world. ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY is one best example for this. The funny and funky dance moves that PSY does in the entire video makes people enjoy watching and groove to the tune. The viewership status for this top rated video is –

Search Term: Gangnam Style
TOTAL - 74,700 results
Officialpsy - 940,736,112 views

Total views in the entire first page of You Tube search – 1,574,778,731 views

Just drink a cup of water in a different manner, you get noted. That’s the power of internet. The world moves the same pace it was through millions of years, but that is not the case with INFORMATION. Information and data travel faster than human thinking, which was once told to be the swiftest one.

Social media gets people engaged for almost 70% of their time a day. Every person who has access to internet will for sure check their social outlets once in a day. And there are also some jobless people who spent their entire time polishing their social outlets. The reason behind? Your social profile is your mirror now. They let others know who you are. The same applies to businesses also. Your business needs to get polished and made presentable to your clients who are online. No other go! RUN WITH THE WORLD TO SURVICE THE COMPETITION

Here below are the top trends in the search world and social media for the year 2012. The figures are self-explanatory and hence I leave them to your referral.
You are running out of time. Plan how to get your brand name one among these lists for the year 2013. You should be aware of the term “VIRAL”. Yes once your update your content into the web and it go’s viral, you will have no need to look back.

Use your creativity, be different and controversial, to build your brand.

What matters the most in 2013?
Again we are igniting a debate which only Google would know the true answer. Social media signals (links, mentions and likes from social media sites) Vs the conventional SEO backlinks has become a hot topic through 2012. While the majority say social signals play a vital role in successful SEO, does this mean that the conventional SEO links are of no use and has only limited effect? As I said, only Google knows the answer! Thankfully Google has shared the answer when Danny Sullivan interviewed Matt Cutts, Head of Google webspam team during the SMX advanced in June. Barry of SearchEngineRountable posted this video snippet where Matt Cutts shares the valuable point about backlinks.
Picture
Now you know what Google values the most! But do you believe what Matt Cutts says?
When preparing the SEO plans for 2013, I am sure that majority of the SEO experts would certainly offer more weightage to the social signals than the conventional links. However, Matt Cutts says otherwise. The big question is “DO YOU BELIEVE MATT CUTTS?” I ran through the comments posted on Barry’s article on the same topic and here is what people think about Matt:

I don't believe Matt. All my friends in social media swear social is more important than links for organic rankings. They can't all be lying..... Or maybe they are just drinking each other's koolaid. – Karen

Social signals have highest correlations with highest search ranking. It based on the relative newness of the results of networks. It had strong correlations with signals of the points. - Sanket Patel

Social metrics are easy to manipulate, i am happy that links are still the most important factor, the problem with Matt is, that he is not always telling the whole truth :( - Marije

Not only in this article, I have seen comments where people openly mention Matt as a “Liar”. No offence Matt, I am just highlighting what I saw in many articles written based around your public information shares.

Believe in Matt Cutts or not, but we did a quick research on this
We did our own research on the importance of social signals in achieving keyword rankings but the research is still immature to come to a conclusion. However, I would share what we have found so far.
  • We focused on finding the backlinks and social media popularity of the sites ranking on the top 4 results on Google for a popular keyword.
  • The top 4 results showed inner pages of 4 different websites and we did a backlink analysis and a social media popularity check for all these.

As said earlier, this is limited data to come to a conclusion because; the figures about the backlinks are just the number of backlinks. The quality of these backlinks which is a very important factor is not taken into consideration.  As you see, social signals from “Twitter” seem to have a good effect on the keyword rankings.
  • The web page on the first position of the search results for our target keyword had only 122 backlinks but has 135 twitter signals which tops the list.
  • The website on the second position doesn’t have any social media signal impact but has higher number of backlinks compared to the site in the second position. While checking the quality of the links for this website, the links were from relevant and high quality sources.  Here the backlinks have an upper hand
  • The site on the 3rd position has moderate amount of social signals and moderate amount of backlinks. The quality of the backlinks on a quick look was okay as well.
  • The site on the 4th position is what the most interesting one. It obviously has lower social media signals than the site in the 3rd position but has the most number of backlinks when compared to the other 3.
The basic findings
Social Signal Comparison
From the social signal comparison chart, we can see that social signals are vital for good search engine rankings but not necessarily. Because, the site on the 2nd position has the lowest number of social signals compared to the others. However, gaining many social signals may be the shortest and quickest route to achieve good keyword rankings as of now.

Backlink Comparison
Comparing the backlink count between these 4 websites, the website in the 4th position has the most number of backlinks but still ranks low. Now the interesting fact is that, the website on the 2nd position has moderate number of backlinks but of high quality from organic web directories and best quality editorial content. That is the reason why the site ranks well even though there isn’t any considerable number of social signals.

So here is the immature conclusion…
We are digging deep into all these findings to come to a solid conclusion on this debate and would be soon publishing the results at our SIM LABS. Right now on a quick look, it seems quality backlinks from top sources still have good effectiveness in terms of keyword ranking. The site in the second position is the best example for that. Social media signals seem to play a vital role in getting an immediate boost in the search engine rankings as well.  The website in the first position is a good example for that. Finally, the website on the 4th position proves that the number of backlinks doesn’t matter at all. To be precise, 3167 random backlinks are equivalent to 745 top quality backlinks.

The biggest challenge in 2013 would be to find a balance between top quality backlinks and good number of social media signals. Below you would find the ratio of social signals and backlinks that each site has. Backlinks are being built by website for almost a decade now and it would take another decade (as Matt Cutts said) for social media signals to overtake backlinks.
We have planned to implement a perfect balance of social signals and backlinks in all our SEO packages for 2013. So, what is your SEO strategy for 2013? More social signals or more backlinks? Share your thoughts!

Social Bookmarking is no doubt an important factor doing SEO
Are you aware of a particular set of internet users who wish to dig into social bookmarking sites to grab a piece of information, than using the default search engine browsing process? Yes, people have the habit of checking these sites, with the quest of landing up at interesting bookmarks, and they finally reach your site.

Do you know that bookmarking your website link onto a website that holds a higher page rank, will eventually boost your website’s rank over search engines which in-turn attracts lots of visitors who convert into potential clients of yours. Exciting information is what…Next to banner ads and Adwords, social bookmarking websites is the main source of backlinks aiding visitors flow to a website.

1. Social bookmarking is indeed time consuming and a tedious job if you do it yourself. But the resultant is priceless. So we could easily ignore the pains undertaken. Simple to say, the process is saving your bookmarks to a public website along with related keywords as tags.

2. The wise approach is to bookmark three types of links. One is to bookmark the webpages of your website, another is bookmarking the webpages that link to your website, and the final one is bookmarking topic related content from other top rated websites. The balance you maintain with the quantity of these three link types is advised to be in a 3:3:4 ratios.

3. Take for example you chose to bookmark in one of the most famous social bookmarking site – Delicious.com. Create an account and install their browser add-on for an easy access bookmarking pages.

4. Add a short description about your website and the tags you enter will be your keywords. Note that the default title that you enter should be keyword specific, since this will end-up being your anchor text. The title you enter for your website is the most crucial factor. You get clicks only if the title is catchy, or else you simply get ignored. The same applies to the description part also. Provide unique content in the “Notes” area.

5. Now go for the bookmarking part, and there is no need for you to bookmark each and every page of your website. Go for the best ones you feel worth sharing. The amount is dependent on the size of your website.

6. Next go for the other websites that link to your site. Advisable are those top rated website links that point to you. Press Release, Guestblogging, your presentation in Slideshare, YouTube videos, Pinterest, your news article been shared by most people, your brand service appreciated by your customers in their website are some among them.

7. Finally find your industry related articles published in high ranking websites. Bookmark these articles on your behalf, which requires no need for title alteration except for adding a small quick note relating the topic bookmarked and related tagging done.

8. Now when every work is done perfect, what I advise is to manually repeat the same process in other social bookmarking sites where you intend to mark presence. Never go for importing or any other automated works, and you will end-up doing a disaster to your efforts.

Picture
Mind for these while doing social bookmarking Flexibility
Are you aware that you always have an option to re-bookmark your website’s pages or related articles? Yes, by doing so you can reach at a conclusion of the best title or description or keywords that attracts visitors to your site. Experiment with different forms of representing your business and showcase to people for them to show you the perfect form.

Proper category selection
Submitting your content under appropriate categories is vital. If you miss optimizing your content according to the categories your efforts will end up a waste of time. Submit one webpage to only one most apt category. Don’t do numerous bookmarking for a single page with the intent of getting more traffic. Also, if you have a moderately popular brand and when visitors to social bookmarking sites find your brand name displayed over unrelated bookmarks that will the end of them having good-will over your brand. So be careful and attentive while bookmarking your webpages into these popular sites.

No automated bookmarking
Manual bookmarking is the best approach doing social bookmarking. Don’t go for automated software available in market which does the job in the most trustful manner. Once you go for automated process, and find all wrong categorization done for your webpages, you will get frustrated and tensed when you are pushed to a situation doing manual submission as a correction process. And removing wrong categorization as a whole will be a stressful job for you.

No doing all pages
Please avoid each and every page of your website. Choose only those which have good content and avoid bookmarking pages that are thin in content. One good content page bookmarked is worth it, rather than doing all available pages, since a visitor landing on your webpage that has no necessary information may no longer pay attention to your website, even if that was the only page lacking good information. You website will gain a black mark in his perspective.

Diversify your bookmarking of pages
Don’t stop with bookmarking only the main page of your website. You ought to bookmark your websites’ subpages also, the selective and the best ones. This makes your bookmarking process more effective and worth doing.

Proper Title
Your title represents the quality of information your webpage holds. So never compromise on the quality and uniqueness of your bookmarking titles while doing the process.

Proper keywords
Keyword selection and tag assigning are also equally important. Be different while doing this. Don’t choose a general keyword for your bookmarked webpage. This pulls people to open your website and explore what it is about.

Proper Content
Bookmarking a webpage that is rich in pictures and graphics, and having no content to display or convince the visitor will be a bad practice. People may not find anything informative on your website and may bunk immediately. So always remember to bookmark a webpage that has a well-written and analyzed article of yours rich in keywords and information for the tag you have chosen.

Make your Bookmarks go viral
Optimize your website and webpages, so that your book marked pages go viral getting shared by lot many visitors who find your content to be interesting as well as useful. This way you can build up your brand name and increase turn-over out of your business.

Be patient
Never opt to do the bookmarking process in a hurry, especially on Fridays after 4pm. You are sure to mess up with the title, description and tags. Do it when you are relaxed and passionate enough to work driving traffic. Monday to Wednesday, I suggest.

The latest Panda Update #22, affected 0.8% of the English Queries: Google says
Google confirmed that it had rolled out a Panda Update around November 21, as a response to Barry Schwartz’s email enquiry regarding a possible update through the week. Barry had reported on November 19 about his speculations on a possible Panda update that might had done over the weekend, and that he had mailed Google seeking a confirmation. Google responded saying, “We make over 500 improvements to Google Search each year so we can surface high-quality information for our users.” The search big also clued him of a possible Panda refresh within the next 7-10 days. So the update has happened just two days after Barry had asked for a confirmation on Panda #22 update from Google. Google has also added that the impact will be meager, of approximately 0.8% English queries.

Most of them who have commented about Panda #22 have reported of improvements in their traffic; post this recent update, while some have seen a drop. Hope this update has not affected a lot of the websites round the globe and the impact should not be as severe as what we experienced with the Panda #20 that affected 2.4% of English Queries which in turn created a catastrophic stir in traffic over most websites. The last Google update that got confirmed in the month of November was Panda Update 21 which happened on November 5, affecting ~1.1% of English queries. This was also a serene one compared to the #20 update.

  • “@Barry there certainly was an "update" on November 16-17.. and we called it "UFO" as many heard about it but none can prove...”
  • “Our traffic improved 20%, that's two improvements in a row now but I have to say this was a much smaller improvement for my site than I expected.”
  • “I don't find any solid reason why so many updates one by one in a couple of months. The panda updated on 5th of Nov 2012 brought me great news. The latest update took my keywords down. So what should I understand now: They are just trying to fixing things but not really on right track and things going wrong that's why they need second update in couple of weeks? Because if my website was not enough compatible to Google Guidelines then it must not be ranked after being stuck with so many updates. Or they are just making trying to fix their own made problems that ruining the small business.”
  • “I thought it was more weather related the last few weeks than anything after finally seeing some improvements for the first time since being hit by Panda 1.0. Colder weather typically brings in more traffic as many focus their home improvement (my industry) activities indoors.”
  • “One of our clients saw image impression drop off of -25% on the 19th, query impressions remained the same. I believe if you are a content/photo heavy site, the changes to image search may be part of the issue.”
  • “If the Panda Update was on November 21, it seems to me that variations on December 1 and 2 would be related to something else rather Panda. Is there any reason to assume that Panda changes dragged on for 10 days?”
  • “Don’t care. I’ve set up Share this links on most of my pages and readers are sharing my content. My traffic is down, but my revenues are up! I have half the traffic I had before Panda, but most of the traffic I lost was worthless anyway; my ad click rate has doubled. I now focus on what I do best, which is my editing service, and ad revenue is merely a little extra to pay for the webhosting and part of my overhead. My focus is no longer on Google, but on encouraging existing clients to return and bring friends, and on social media. Google is going to be irrelevant soon. Its day has passed.”

Did you gain or lose out of the recent Panda Update #22? Or, did you ever notice a change in your traffic?

Site Navigation
Are you sure that people who land on your webpages are able to access information from your website easily? Have you updated your sites design from how it was years back? Especially for eCommerce websites. Easy navigation within your website is the key to success. Don’t confuse your customers with so many choices and detailing. Select only those are advised to be displayed and coordinate accordingly. For example, if you display a wallet, display the picture of a person holding it, again the front and back images of the wallet, one image showing the inside of the wallet. Coming to content remember to showcase the material with which the wallet is made, cost, discount details, brand name, and shipping details. When you navigate your user from this page, opt them with selection based on a different colored wallet from the same brand and one from a different brand. Also display a hot combo offer of your website nearby, that they never bounce from your site. Make them hang on your site for a while and create a good impression for a purchase sometime later/ bookmark for future reference.

Picture
Your Website Helps Bring A Way Out?
Is your website equipped enough to bring resolutions to problems faced by people? This is also similar to content optimization. When a commoner lands on your website, most probably from search engines, they should be able to understand what your website is about. They should find the answer to their query at your site itself, without putting an extra effort to surface a new website. Provide the data legibly. Also take into account the font and its size. Headings should differ from sub-headings, while sub-headings differ from that of the content.

Picture
Social Media Buttons
Place only few social media share buttons over each page of your website, and that too the most influential ones. My choice would be Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. The choice is based on the engagement and conversion rate. Also showcase the number of shares your website has gained, somewhere near to the buttons. Do remember to display this in public once you gain a decent count to showcase. Don’t go for displaying lame data of the sort - 15 re-tweets, 10 Facebook likes and 8 re-pins. Another most important thing is to merge your Twitter and Facebook posts. Draw a plan and work accordingly when you enter the social media marketing industry.

Keyword Rich Not Keyword Dense
Keep your website keyword rich and not keyword dense. It’s fine that you predict various key options that users might use to reach your site. But that huge bunch of choices should not bring you down in SERPs. Concentrate on one main keyword and have four more as substitutes of it. Your Meta content should be based on these five keywords. Starting your content possibly with the main keyword will bring dramatic traffic flow towards your site. Also, with the intent to make your site keyword rich don’t walk an extra mile incorporating the keyword anywhere and everywhere. You will not like a site like that and similarly your users too wont.

Content
Never have the idea of scraping content from other websites, affecting their reputation as well. This may also be the other way round. Your fresh content getting scraped by other novice website owners. Detect them effectively using Google webmaster tool OR Track them setting Google Alerts OR Use duplicate content checking tools available in market. Never compromise on this since you might get hit by Google Panda version 23/God & Google knows if the next version number for real is 203 OR 2003.
Picture
Text Displayed As Flash OR Images
Search engine bots lack the capacity of reading content in forms of images and Flash. So avoid displaying valuable content in forms of images. It will be a waste if you choose that option. Also never attempt to create a Flash based website. Despite the factor that Flash powered websites look stunning, we are not advantageous enough to do so from an SEO point of view.

URL format
Pay attention to the format of your website URLs. Avoid having punctuations or other symbols within them expect for hyphen (-), which is always advisable.  This makes your web pages more likely to be readable and understandable by search engine bots. Hence easy ranking!

Add Good & Attractive Images
Always remember to back-up your content with attractive and meaningful images. Images play a great role in getting content viral, especially after the launch of Pinterest.
